Art on Paper's 9th Edition Receives Outstanding Reception and Substantial Sales

New York, New York Art on Paper, New York City's esteemed fair focused on paper-based art, concluded its eagerly awaited 9th edition at Pier 36 from September 7–10 with tremendous excitement amongst patrons and lucrative sales for the participating galleries. Aligned with the prestigious Armory Arts Week, the fair showcased a remarkable array of more than 100 premier galleries, all committed to highlighting the creativity and allure of art on paper. Renowned for breaking artistic conventions, the event continues to cement its role as an essential destination for both veteran art aficionados and new collectors year after year.

Curated with precision by Nato Thompson, a renowned cultural architect and newly-appointed Creative Director at Art Market, in collaboration with Art on Paper’s Director Kelly Freeman, this revered annual showcase of paper-based art captivated a diverse audience of patrons, gallerists, and connoisseurs of the medium. Attendees were enthralled by the striking and intricate array of works that beautifully encapsulated the multifaceted dimensions and vast complexities of the world of paper-based art.

More than 15,000 visitors attended over the four-day event, eager to explore the expansive, museum-quality exhibition featuring the pinnacle of art on paper. Gallery owners who participated were equally thrilled, reporting numerous meaningful engagements with collectors that led to impressive sales across varied price points. The atmosphere of thoughtful curation and diverse artistic expression fostered an environment ripe for meaningful dialogues and transactions.

Throughout the fair, attendees were buzzing about the enriching programming, and captivating installations that added layers of understanding and insight. Adding a new dimension this year was a collaboration with the Center for Book Arts (CBA) on the presentation of Art on Paper’s inaugural BOOKSMART FAIR. This unique artists' book fair brought together a number of distinguished institutions, each offering a curated selection of artists' books that engaged the form in a myriad of ways. Notable highlights included the Book/Print Artist/Scholar of Color Collective's showcase of Deep Time by Rhada Pandey and the MoMA Library Council's presentation of Charles LeDray's Book Ends.

This year saw the return of Flat Files, presented by Visit St. Pete/Clearwater, which spotlighted fine art printmakers and publishers from around the world. Mannekan Press, Inky Editions, Lily Press and Lincoln Center Editions were among the many exhibitors in this focus section, which received high praise from collectors and curators. Further enriching the fair's offering were daily live printing workshops by Shoestring Press, featuring artists like Mike Perry, Victoria Carter, and Layla Nami. These interactive sessions offered patrons a firsthand look at various printmaking methods, from linocut to silkscreen printing, and were met with overwhelming enthusiasm.

Visitors also had the opportunity to immerse themselves in a multi-day experience with "FREE FILM: NYC," a collaboration between WORTHLESSSTUDIOS and the Lower Eastside Girls Club. This initiative allowed patrons to explore the world of analog photography, contributing to a curated book of expressive photos. Patrons also witnessed an array of transformative installations, such as Drew Francis Cameron's demonstration of turning military uniforms into handmade paper and Striped Canary's living exhibit Proposal for a Future Forest, 2023, which evolved throughout the event. Additional public projects included The Power of Art, presented by Amplifier; Rose Eken’s paper clay sculpture NYC Ghosts and Flowers, presented by Alchemy Gallery, and more large-scale works by Tariqa Waters and Fitzhugh Karol, among others.

As Art on Paper sets its sights on future editions, the event's resounding success reinforces its role as a vital cultural hub and a key platform for advancing paper-based art, fostering community, and inspiring artistic discourse. The fair's lasting influence within the art world is sure to continue as it nurtures new relationships, ignites meaningful conversations, and sustains a vibrant and evolving artistic community.

The strength of this year’s Art on Paper was recognized by galleries, artists, and buyers alike:

From Corina Reynolds, Center for Book Arts: “The BOOKSMART FAIR was a huge success. Thanks to the new partnership with Art on Paper, Center for Book Arts was able to provide a platform for emerging and underrepresented artists to connect with new collectors—all of the participating organizations reported excellent sales and are excited to see how the fair grows in the coming years.”

From Eileen Maguire, Stoney Road Press: “For us Art on Paper is a vibrant fair with a hugely engaged and interested audience. Stoney Road Press relished the opportunity to meet previous and new clients and always enjoy this well run and highly professional event with a great management team. We look forward to being back at Pier 36 next year.”

From Bianca Barquet, Marlborough Graphics: “This was Marlborough’s first year participating in Art on Paper and we loved it! We felt so welcome by fellow exhibitors and visitors and are pleased with the positive response our booth received. A big thank you to the AMP team for their help through all the planning and we are looking forward to returning in 2024.”

From Tanya Weddemire, Tanya Weddemire Gallery: “Art on Paper 2023 was an amazing experience. I’m happy that we did the show and exhibited Guy Stanley Philoche “Give Us Our Flowers”
series which was well received by the viewers. Collectors purchased works every day and they were intrigued about the series and inspiration behind Guy’s career. This was our debut at an art fair; and as an emerging gallery, I would like to thank Kelly and the staff for the support and setting the stage of what it truly looks like being an exhibitor.”

From Nicola Lorenz, Forum Gallery: “Forum Gallery was pleased to exhibit at the 2023 edition of Art on Paper. We were delighted to reconnect with collectors, colleagues and fellow exhibitors and are proud to have added works by Steven Assael, Alyssa Monks, and Clio Newton to the collection of an American museum.”

From Kristen Accola, Accola Griefen Fine Art: "We were pleased with the strong attendance throughout the fair and impressed by the level of interest from attendees. Sales were good and we appreciated the presence of many museum curators as well."
